Concussion Rehabilitation

A structured, individualised pathway back to activity and sport

A concussion can affect far more than your ability to play sport. Headaches, dizziness, fatigue, poor concentration, balance problems and sensitivity to light or noise can all interfere with work, school, exercise and everyday life. At Summit Rehabilitation, we provide a structured concussion rehabilitation service designed to guide you safely from the early stages of recovery through to a progressive return to exercise, training and sport. Our 3-appointment Concussion Management Programme combines clinical reassessment, exercise progression and sport-specific rehabilitation across a minimum 21-day graduated return-to-play pathway.

Return to Play. Safely. Confidently.

Concussion rehabilitation assessment at Summit Rehabilitation

Our Concussion Management Programme

Our programme consists of three planned clinical appointments:

Initial Concussion Assessment - 45 minutes

Your first appointment establishes a detailed picture of your current symptoms, functional capacity and readiness to begin progressing your activity.

Your assessment may include:

  • Detailed concussion and injury history

  • Symptom assessment

  • Cognitive screening

  • Balance and coordination assessment

  • Vestibular and ocular assessment

  • Cervical assessment where clinically appropriate

  • Exercise tolerance assessment

  • Review of work, school and everyday activity demands

We then use these findings to create an individualised recovery and activity plan. You will be given clear guidance on what you can do between appointments and how to monitor your response to increasing activity.

Progression & Reassessment - 30 minutes

Your second appointment reviews how you have responded to increased cognitive and physical activity.

We reassess relevant symptoms and clinical findings before progressively increasing your rehabilitation.

This may include:

  • Progressive aerobic exercise

  • Strength and conditioning

  • Balance and coordination

  • Vestibular and visual exercises

  • Increased cognitive demand

  • Sport-specific movement

  • Progressive running or field/court work

The aim is to gradually increase your tolerance to the demands of your normal life and sport without provoking a significant or sustained increase in symptoms.

Return-to-Sport Assessment - 30 minutes

The final appointment focuses on your readiness to return to higher-level exercise and sport.

Depending on your sport, this may include:

  • Sport-specific movement

  • Running and acceleration

  • Change of direction

  • Balance and coordination

  • Reaction and decision-making

  • Visual tracking

  • Exercise tolerance

  • Increasing physical and cognitive demands

Where appropriate, we will provide a clear progression towards full training and competitive sport.

Why a graduated approach matters

Returning to sport after concussion is not simply a case of waiting until you feel better and then returning to full training.

Your brain and body need to progressively tolerate increasing levels of physical, cognitive and sport-specific demand.

Our approach therefore progresses through increasingly challenging stages, while monitoring your symptoms and functional response.

Progression is based on your recovery, not simply the number of days since your injury. The 21-day timeframe should therefore be viewed as part of a minimum graduated return-to-sport pathway, rather than a guarantee that every athlete will be ready to compete after exactly 21 days.

Who is the service for?

Our concussion rehabilitation service is suitable for:

  • Adults with concussion

  • Adolescent athletes

  • Football players

  • Rugby players

  • Tennis players

  • Skiers and snowboarders

  • Runners

  • School and university athletes

  • Recreational and competitive sportspeople

We also work with patients referred by GPs, consultants and other healthcare professionals who require structured rehabilitation and support with their return to activity or sport.

What happens between appointments?

Your rehabilitation does not stop when you leave the clinic. You will receive guidance on your appropriate level of activity between appointments, including how to progress exercise and what symptoms to monitor. This allows us to build your tolerance progressively rather than relying solely on what happens during your clinic appointments.

When can I return to sport?

Return to sport is individual and depends on your symptoms, clinical findings and ability to tolerate progressively increasing levels of activity. You should not return directly to competitive sport following a concussion. Instead, you will progress through a graduated return-to-sport pathway, increasing physical and cognitive demands as your recovery allows. Competitive sport should not be resumed before the appropriate minimum timeframe and should only occur once the relevant return-to-sport stages have been successfully completed. If your symptoms persist or your recovery is not progressing as expected, further assessment or medical review may be recommended.

Important Information

Concussion can occasionally be associated with more serious head injuries. Anyone with a suspected concussion should be appropriately assessed following their injury. This service is designed for concussion rehabilitation and graduated return to activity and sport. It does not replace emergency medical assessment or investigation where clinically indicated.

If symptoms are severe, worsening, unusual, or concerning following a head injury, appropriate urgent medical assessment should be sought.
